Landmannalaugar is a place in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve  in the Highlands of Iceland. It is a stuning view with so many mountains that are in huge variation of colours. Also you can bath in natural hot spring there.

We started our trip from Reykjavik visiting few places on the way. We went to Seljalandsfoss waterfall, hidden Gljufarfoss waterfall and after Landmannalaugar to Gjain valley

There are few ways to get to Landmannalaugar and we chosen the hardest one. Reykjavik – Selfoss – Vik – F208 road to Landmannalaugar.

It was such a thrilling adventure – we had to cross more than 20 rivers and the views around when you go through road F208 are amazing. I would say this road is only for expert drivers. On the way of 70 km on F208 road we met only one car and it was much bigger than our Honda CR-V so if you are going there let someone know about your trip.

When you reach Landmannalaugar there are 2 last streams (you can see them in picture above) to cross but a lot of people leave their cars in parking before river. You can cross the river on foot through the bridge.

If you decide to stay here over the night you will have to pay 2000 ISK per person. That includes camping, using showers and toilets. If you are not staying over night but want to use showers or toilets you will have to pay 500 ISK admission fee and they will give you paper bracelet that you have to wear. We lost our bracelets at the hot spring and it was complicated to explain about that to staff when we were going to toilets. They should think about something else because probably a lot of people loosing bracelets and they are flowing down the river. Also I saw strange situation when 2 backpackers wanted to use the toilet for one minute and they had only 300 ISK. The worker told to pay full or they are not allowed to get inside and another toilet is many kilometres away.  It was rude. Very rude. They left and probably did everything somewhere around the corner..

We came to Landmannalaugar aroud at 22:00 we put a tent in the place and went to hot spring. There was around 30 people at that time inside and all of them gathered in one spot. We found out why – when you enter the hot spring you can feel that water is runing and there are many cold streams. The best place to stay is near the place where hot water is runing into the spring. Otherway it’s kind a cold.. So we stayed for few hours and many people left during that time. So at midnight we had a huge spring for ourselves.

From Landmannalaugar you can go on many hikes. It is a starting point for a four-day-long hiking trail called Laugavegur. The usual four day trail ends in Þórsmörk, but one or two days can be added, trekking then all the way to Skógar nearly at the coast via Fimmvörðuháls between the two glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. If you go for it – be well prepared and remember – usualy in highlands there is no phone signal.

On our way back to Reykjavik we took easier common road from Landmannalaugar. It is Landmannalaugar – F208 – F26 – 32 – Selfoss – Reykjavik.

Finding place – Easy.
Distance from Reykjavik – 196 km.
